To be really honest, it is absolutely fantastic. It is a user-friendly platform, that has lots of different features to it. I particularly like the industry content on different career areas. To have all that in one place, where we can track it makes it really, really valuable.

The Next Big Thing

This is your Welcome section paragraph. As the first text your readers encounter, this copy should clearly convey what your site is all about.

What is your careers strategy and how does The Careers Department fit into it?

Karen: Victoria has an increasingly strong focus on the careers of students, placing pressure on schools and careers advisors to ensure that students are engaging with their future plans. One thing I've tried to do is push the careers curriculum throughout the school and get teachers better equipped and to feel more comfortable.

We have an hour a week which is called ‘Connect’ and it teaches a whole range of personal development skills which the careers curriculum fits in with. We’ve been mapping out a curriculum and building The Careers Department within this session.

We also encourage certain year groups to use the Skills Training tasks and try to work them into lesson plans.

Zac: We get a lot of students, particularly students who might be disengaged with an academic form of learning, to have an interview with our career's coordinator. They’re able to use The Careers Department in certain ways with those students to get them thinking about their own career trajectory.

Why did you choose The Careers Department?

Karen: I guess for me; it was about trying to find a program that can complement the curriculum and what we're doing here.

Zac: It was a good place where we could fulfill some of our career's curriculum needs in a digital format, that allowed us to easily track how students were progressing with each of the tasks. It also tied in well with some of the other careers work we were doing at the time, especially finding Work Experience placements for Year 10, and around trying to set up pathway goals for moving into the senior years of study.

I also found that it was a really good launching pad for them to complete their Department of Education training careers plan. It’s easy for them to fill that out through The Careers Department and then to transfer some of that information onto the DOE platform as well.

03

What features or resources have you used on the platform?

Karen: I view the analytics to see when students are logging in. Another thing I'm finding useful is how you can turn the lesson toggles on and off. I've tried to turn them off so that students and teachers don't get too overwhelmed or jump onto the next task early.

Careers is meant to be embedded across the curriculum, so an English teacher for instance, could be teaching careers related subject that might be around writing a cover letter or a resume which is then uploaded into The Careers Department. It’s good to see that there are features like this that can be used across different subjects.

04

What do you enjoy the most about the program?

Karen: To be honest, I think Virtual Work Experience was a big carrot because it's getting harder and harder to find work experience places. And the teachers really like it because the students get feedback and a certificate upon completion, it's less work for the teachers.

It was also something unique that you couldn't really get anywhere else to the level that you guys have done it.

Zac: To be really honest, is absolutely fantastic. It is a user-friendly platform, that has lots of different features to it. I particularly like the information outside the task modules, on different career areas (within the industry exploration section). To have all that in one place, where we can track it makes it really, really valuable.

Do you think students find value in The Careers Department?

Karen: I've got links to The Careers Department on our own school portal, so they can just jump on whenever or wherever they like. Using the analytics, I noticed a few kids were using it on the holidays which was really good to see.

Zac: Students have found it really valuable, and they’ve been using the program outside of class and outside of teacher direction. Our tutors have been able to direct students to different parts of the site when they have shown a bit of interest in a career pathway.

06

Would you recommend The Careers Department to other Schools?

Karen: I have recommended The Careers Department to quite a few people in terms of the work experience, especially because a few schools have been looking for ways to do that.

Another thing is that I think it’s well supported, every time I've emailed the team, they ring me straight away. I think that's really important because we're so busy and need quick answers.

Does this school's rollout sound like how you would like to implement The Careers Department?
