A lot of my students have a pre-determined plan in mind for the path they are wanting to take after school. I’ve found that using The Careers Department helps open their eyes to other pathways or industries they hadn’t considered before.

The Next Big Thing

This is your Welcome section paragraph. As the first text your readers encounter, this copy should clearly convey what your site is all about.

01

What does your careers program look like at Newman Senior Technical College?

For our Year 11 students, we run a work readiness program in weeks 5-6 of the first term, which allows them to then undertake 1 day of Work Experience per week. They're allowed to study up to three VET subjects at this point.

In Year 12, students can drop down to one VET subject and complete up to two days of Work Experience per week. This allows students to focus on their final year, and they are also able to complete a Certificate Three.

We also run an Industry-Based Learning program. That's where the work placement is facilitated in class, and we organise contracts, hours of work, and other related tasks.

We spoke with Kylie Ham (2021) from Newman Technical College, which provides students with a higher education outside of the traditional sense. They prepare Year 11 and 12 students by offering regular work placements and VET courses in their area of interest.

02

Do the majority of your students select trades?

Yes, it's fairly trade-dominated, such as Construction, Electrotechnology, Metals Engineering, and Plumbing. We also offer non-VET subjects like Sports, Lifestyle, and Recreation. Additionally, we have service-oriented subjects such as Hospitality and Tourism Services.

Students can also study at TAFE through eVet. We have students in Beauty, Hairdressing, Animal Studies, and they can attend TAFE one day a week whilst still at school.

Traditionally, students completed VET courses, but there has been an increased uptake of students pursuing university degrees. In previous years, we've had around 25 students go on to university.

03

Can you explain how you've implemented TCD within your school?

Within the ‘Industry-Based Learning’ class, students are given resources and activities related to careers. They work on their resumes, apply for jobs, assess their goals, or anything that helps them progress further. The Careers Department resources are often utilised in that class.

I also find The Careers Department useful when students are unable to attend their physical Work Experience. If they're injured, dealing with something at home, or new to the college and not ready to go out yet, it's a great alternative.

04

What TCD features do you use most often with your students?

We primarily utilise Virtual Work Experience because finding placements for 400 students, especially in specific areas, is very difficult.

We also get a lot of use out of the industry content within our 'Industry-Based Learning' class.

05

How has The Careers Department helped broaden your students career thinking?

A lot of my students have a pre-determined plan in mind for the path they are wanting to take after school. I’ve found that using The Careers Department helps open their eyes to other pathways or industries they hadn’t considered before. I’ve had many students change their minds, and many of them still don't know what they want to do. But the program helps them figure it out.

The industry content is awesome for those students who need more time to explore. They can spend a bit of time looking at relevant things and hearing from people who work in the industry. I think it helps students make those tough decisions.

06

What kind of feedback have you received from students, parents, or teachers?

I've received positive feedback from those who have used it. They say things like, "I like the layout. It looks very modern. It's easy to navigate. I think the content is very good."

I think it's one of the best platforms out there for sure. We have to be picky about what we use because there's a lot out there, but The Careers Department is definitely my go-to.

Does this school's rollout sound like how you would like to implement The Careers Department?
