I think the resources are really honest. They don't sell you the dream course or the dream job. It's more realistic about what it entails. I love that you guys do that. That's why I direct students to The Careers Department site in my one-on-one consultations.

The Next Big Thing

This is your Welcome section paragraph. As the first text your readers encounter, this copy should clearly convey what your site is all about.

01

How is your career program structured?

Year 9 and 10 is very much focused on the world of work. We cover resumes, job applications, and interview skills.

In Year 10, we move into "Who am I and what are my interests?" We also focus on subject selection, and we do a big career assessment with them, along with some experiential learning.

In Year 11, we focus on career exploration, and then in Year 12, we help students with applications and empower them to make decisions. So that's broadly the topics that we work on through the different year groups.

I mostly work with Years 9 to 12, but whether they're in Year 5 and 6, all the way through to Year 12, they can book a meeting to see me and colleague Katrina Smith (we share the role). My door is always open to students.

02

Can you explain how you've implemented TCD within your school?

I use it in my consultations for exploration of different industries, especially with Year 10, 11, and 12.

We have a subject called ‘Integrated Learning,’ and for the last few years, we've been getting the students to do the career profiling assessment on the platform, and they love that.

Our Year 9 students were also tasked with creating a careers market that they designed themselves. They had to research different areas, come up with different jobs within those areas that they were interested in, and then present it to the rest of their cohort. They used lots of different resources, but The Careers Department was the main one.

03

What TCD features do you use most often with your students?

I tend to use the industries page and the Virtual Work Experience to deep dive into the industries students are interested in. So, I direct them to both of these sections of the site because they're wonderful resources.

I think the resources are really honest. They don't sell you the dream course or the dream job. It's more realistic about what it entails. I love that you guys do that. That's why I direct students to The Careers Department site in my one-on-one consultations.

04

Do other teachers in your school use TCD within their classes?

Our Integrated Learning teachers have used it. We got them all to sign up as part of the onboarding process, which worked really well.

We're about to roll out some subject-based sessions, and we'll be using The Careers Department's teacher resources to create lesson plans based on the subject areas.

05

Do you find that students are interested in the content and are more engaged with their career education?

Yeah, they get really excited when you show them the industries they're interested in and that are relevant to them, but then there are different jobs that maybe they hadn't thought of or different courses that they hadn't considered. I think primarily our students are using it to build their knowledge around areas of interest.

06

What do you like most about The Careers Department?

What I like most about it is that it's user-friendly. I like that it provides a little snapshot, so it's easy to engage with for a short period of time. I love the Graduate tours as well; I think they're great little clips that give you a real-world view. It's also a modern resource that's up to date with what's going on in the world of work now.

I know the word is spreading about what a great resource The Careers Department is, we're always talking to our colleagues about how great it is.

Does this school's rollout sound like how you would like to implement The Careers Department?
